Questions to guide working group discussions
- What have we learned from the successes and failures of research and extension in Africa
- How can we promote more demand-driven modes of research and extension? What institutional models and modes of financing can be developed to put farmers in control?
- How can we more effectively engage different providers of research and extension? Private sector, farmer-to-farmer extension, civil society, public agencies?
- What needs to be done to reform public sector research and extension?
- How can the private sector research and extension be more effectively harnessed? What is the role of public-private partnerships in research and extension and what have we learned from experience?
- What is the role of ICTs in extension work?
- What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
These questions illustrate the range of issues that could be addressed by the working groups. While they should not be considered to be the only issues that may be discussed, and participants are at liberty to raise others that fall within the scope of the working groups, presenters are asked to consider giving priority to some of these questions.
Please note that all working groups are asked to consider: What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
