Questions to guide working group discussions
- Why has the microfinance revolution made slow progress in rural Africa?
- What models of financial service delivery are most appropriate for rural parts of Africa? How can their outreach to the poor be extended while ensuring financial sustainability? Are there new innovations that show promise?
- What are the main challenges in strengthening formal financial institutions? How can community-based financial institutions be linked to the formal sector?
- What is the role of ICTs in extending access to financial services?
- What policy reforms are required at national level to promote the development of rural financial services?
- What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
These questions illustrate the range of issues that could be addressed by the working groups. While they should not be considered to be the only issues that may be discussed, and participants are at liberty to raise others that fall within the scope of the working groups, presenters are asked to consider giving priority to some of these questions.
Please note that all working groups are asked to consider: What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
