Questions to guide working group discussions
- How are global market shifts affecting rural livelihoods? Please consider the impact of supply chain integration, new procurement methods, supermarketisation and increasing quality requirements? What is the potential for higher value agricultural products to generate sustained improvements in rural livelihoods?
- How do the impacts vary between different groups, geographical areas and types of farming system? Who is gaining? Who is losing? Are there different impacts between men and women?
- How can small farmers be linked to global supply chains as producers or labourers?
- What are the main obstacles to boosting competitiveness of agricultural producers and how can these be overcome?
- What are the main constraints in the agricultural investment climate and how can they be overcome?
- How can the challenges imposed by increasingly stringent sanitary and phytosanitary requirements be addressed?
- What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
These questions illustrate the range of issues that could be addressed by the working groups. While they should not be considered to be the only issues that may be discussed, and participants are at liberty to raise others that fall within the scope of the working groups, presenters are asked to consider giving priority to some of these questions.
Please note that all working groups are asked to consider: What are the implications for development strategies, and what do donors need to do differently?
