Short biographic note

Regine Andersen is a senior research fellow at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute in Norway www.fni.no, with doctoral degree in political science. She has specialised in the effects of international agreements on the management of crop genetic resources in developing countries. Her book Governing Agrobiodiversity: Plant Genetics and Developing Countries is forthcoming this year. Regine Andersen is also the leader of the Farmers’ Rights Project, an international project supporting the implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture under the FAO with research based information www.fni.no/farmers/main.html. The diversity of crop genetic resources is not only the basis of all plant breeding, it is crucial to food security among rural poor in developing countries. Farmers have always been the custodians of these resources, but their legal space is decreasing, thus threatening the basis of food security. This is the background for Regine Andersen’s research interest.
